Granting Italian citizenship to foreign citizens of Italian ancestry

(jure sanguinis citizenship)

Foreign citizens of Italian ancestry who are listed in the Resident Population Register may present an application to the Registrar to be granted Italian citizenship in accordance with the provisions given by the Ministry of the Interior in Circular K.28.1 of 08/04/1991.

Required documentation:

The applicant must be listed in the Resident Population Registry and present the application in person at the Citizenship office, addressing it to the Mayor of the municipality of his/her residence, so as to be granted Italian citizenship by jure sanguinis.

The application must provide information identifying the Italian ancestor who had emigrated and the following original documentation must be attached, duly translated into Italian and authenticated (except for the exemptions provided for by international agreements):

  • an extract of the birth certificate of the Italian ancestor who emigrated abroad, issued by the Italian municipality where he/she was born;
  • the birth certificates, with official translation in Italian, of all his/her lineal descendants, including that of the person claiming to possess Italian citizenship;
  • the marriage and death certificates of the Italian ancestor who emigrated abroad, complete with official translation in Italian, if these events occurred abroad;
  • the wedding and any death certificates of his/her lineal descendants, including those of the parents of the person claiming possession of Italian citizenship;
  • a certificate issued by the authorities of the foreign country to which the ancestor emigrated, complete with official translation in Italian, certifying that the Italian ancestor who had emigrated from Italy did not acquire the citizenship of the foreign country before the birth of the applicant's ascendant;
  • a certificate issued by the relevant Italian consular authority certifying that neither the lineal ascendants nor the person claiming possession of Italian citizenship have ever renounced it; this is automatically acquired and the time limit for finalising the procedure is suspended during any delays in acquiring it;
  • the applicant's personal information is verified automatically.

Processing time

The time limit for finalising the procedure for granting Italian citizenship is set by the national regulations governing administrative procedures (Article 2 of Law no. 241 of 07/08/1990 as amended).

Costs

The application must be presented with a revenue stamp of EUR 16.00.
